What are Acne Spots? How Can They Be Removed?

The skin contains millions of sebaceous glands that secrete sebum, through the skin pores onto the surface of the skin. Normally, sebum simply helps to keep the skin healthy. An acne spot forms when a pore becomes blocked by a plug of dead skin cells mixed with sebum. This tends to happen when the sebaceous gland produces more sebum than usual.

A whitehead is a skin pore that is blocked by a plug deep down.
A blackhead is a pore that has become plugged at its opening. The black color is a build-up of the normal skin pigments from dead cells – it is not dirt.

The bacteria that normally live on the surface of the skin move into the blocked pore. This can result in pus formation, leading to yellow spots, redness and inflammation. In some people, these inflamed spots can become large and lumpy.

Acne pigment spots

Pigment is produced in the skin as a natural result of skin injury.   The injury could be a cut, a burn or an infection, such as acne.  Pigment is brown to dark brown in color.  This should not be confused with temporary red marks that are produced by the infection, inflammation and the healing process.

Pigment can also be caused or exaggerated by hormones within the skin.  Dark skin is especially prone to pigment spots resulting from inflammation.  Increased hormonal production during pregnancy may cause pigment marks from inflammation to be darker and last longer.

Pigment spots are a direct result of acne inflammation and therefore moderating the inflammatory response of your body to acne lesions will reduce the problems with pigment spots.  Rather than attempting to treat or lighten the pigment, the problem is best resolved by controlling or eliminating the cause, which is inflammation and allowing the pigment spots to resolve themselves naturally.

Red spots:
