Now I know that the road to great skin can take you to some pretty weird places, but even I made a face when I first heard about Oil Pulling!
This more unusual detoxification method has recently become more popular, especially among London's health and beauty gurus, so I wanted to find out more …
What is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is an old Ayurvedic remedy for asthma and acne.
The process itself involves "pulling" a tablespoon of cold-pressed organic vegetable oil through your teeth and around your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes.
Finally, the oil that you spit out should resemble an aqueous, milky substance. If the oil is clear or your mouth feels oily, you haven't "pulled" long enough.
What type of oil should I use?
You can use any organic, cold-pressed, unrefined vegetable oil. The most commonly recommended are sesame, coconut and castor oil.
What does it do?
Oil pulling is mainly used to improve oral health, especially in diseases such as gingivitis, plaque formation and sensitivity.
Dr. However, Bruce Fife, who wrote a book on oil pulling, argues that oral health is related to the health of your entire body.
Proponents of oil pulling claim that the process detoxifies the body – and can reduce the appearance of rashes, blemishes, and acne, as the oils "pull out" toxins and bad bacteria in your mouth that can have a general health impact.
Other health benefits include improved gum health, whiter teeth, better immunity and a clearer complexion.
Jasmine Hemsley (half of Hemsley & Hemsley) swears by oil pulling and says:
"I feel the benefits in my mouth and general well-being and my teeth feel like I was just at the dentist after I gave them a brush."
Are you going to try oil? Or is that a step too far for you?
